  I was into BMX, but the shop I went to was playing Powell’s Future Primitive, and it was just way too cool.

  There are a lot, but Matt Hensley for sure.

  Ollies.
• Similarities between skating and snowboarding:
  I don’t really feel that many similarities, but each has its own depth and appeal. I think how much overlap you feel depends on how deep you’re into it.

  9-inch Santa Cruz deck, Independent Stage 4 151 trucks, OJ 56mm 99a wheels, Bronson Raw Bearings, and Mob Grip lightly sanded before use.

  Nothing recently. I’ll keep trying.
• Age limit for cone ollies:
  I’m 52 now and I can still do them. I plan to keep going every year, but it’s starting to feel a little sketchy.

  A bowl session in the US with Allan Peterson, John Cardiel, and others. It was insane.
• Best thing about your hometown:
  It snows an unbelievable amount, but everyone just lives their life like it’s normal.
• Hidden gems in Hokkaido:
  Drive about an hour from Sapporo and pretty much everywhere feels like a hidden spot.
• Recommended local spot:
  A gnarly bank at a park near my place.
• Winter or summer:
  I like both, but Hokkaido’s nature in summer is beautiful and feels amazing.
• Body care routine:
  About 20 minutes of stretching and light strength training in the morning and before bed.
• Recommended ways to relax:
  Skating, fishing, being outside.

  Skating and fishing.
• Secret to sleeping well:
  Eat a lot, drink, move your body nonstop, then take a hot bath.

  Fly fishing, guitar, bicycles, and foraging for wild plants.

  I’ve had so many mentors. Thank you to all of them. I’m grateful to everyone who sessions with me year-round, summer and winter, no matter the age difference.
