Riverbirch Family & Locals -
Shinnosuke Michiue 『Hilandar Tokyo』、issei Mori 『Farside』、Koyo Honda『Farside』、Akira Fukui『80svtr』、Riverbirch & Satoru Friends Part『Farside』。
Riverbirch Family & Locals. - Riverbirch
Stone’D(Hole and Holland)。 -

- Osiris or I-Path:
AREth。
Q & A English
- Hometown:
Kugayama, Tokyo - Occupation:
Skateboarder, owner of Riverbirch Skateshop - Stance:
Goofy - Sponsors:
Riverbirch Family & Locals - Shoe size:
26.5cm - Date of birth:
May 14, 1981 - When you started skating:
During Japan's bubble economy. - What got you into skateboarding:
When I was living in Kugayama, a surfer who lived next door took my family to a skate shop. - What makes your neighborhood special:
It's a laid-back neighborhood with mostly low-rise buildings and lots of independently owned shops. There are old-school coffee shops that still have that nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, along with stores that appreciate and preserve things from the past. It feels like a hidden retreat for grown-ups. The JR Chuo Line rapid trains don't stop at Nishi-Ogikubo on weekends and holidays, so you have to take the local train. But I think that's actually helped preserve the neighborhood's relaxed vibe. - Recommended spots in Nishi-Ogikubo:
The area around Yanagi Koji, which still has that old Showa-era atmosphere, oden restaurants, jingisukan spots, and my favorite izakaya near the north exit. - Impact of the Nishi-Ogikubo redevelopment:
There's a plan to widen the road running from the station's north exit to Ome Kaido from 11 to 16 meters. Construction is happening right up to the entrance of my shop. Apparently, the pavement's going to get better, though. - What makes Suginami Ward great:
There's a ramen shop I really recommend in Ogikubo, and if you head over to Koenji, you've got Kyugokan, run by Takahiro Morita of FESN. Suginami and the surrounding areas are amazing for cruising! - Favorite video parts:
Shinnosuke Michiue in Hilandar Tokyo, Issei Mori in Farside, Koyo Honda in Farside, Akira Fukui in 80svtr, and the Riverbirch & Satoru Friends part in Farside. There are so many more parts that have influenced me, though. - Skaters who have influenced you:
Toshihiro Honda, Taisuke Yokoyama, Yuma Tanigawa, Naotaka Oya, Tenma Fukashiro, Shinnosuke Michiue, Koyo Honda, Ryo Sejiri, Fuma Tsuzuki, Akira Fukui, Raido Tajima, Toa Kanazawa, Moriyasu Nishihira, Hisashi Nakamura, Takahiro Morita, Takaaki Shinzato, Pori, Bobby Puleo, Kevin Coakley, and so many others. - Skaters you look up to:
Riverbirch Family & Locals. - Riverbirch in one word:
Tree. - Best part about running a skate shop:
Nothing gets me more hyped than when someone walks through the door. - Notable people who have randomly dropped by the shop:
Takahiro Morita, Toru Yoshida, Shin Okada, Lui Araki, Toriotoko, Brian Powderly, Matt Rodriguez, Bigfoot, Hisashi Nakamura, Kazuto Shimizu, Venice, Hirotton, Yota Sato, Rodrigo TX, Yuichi Ohara, Itormy, Aruto Watanabe, Ty Beall, Yukihisa Nakamura, Daiki Hoshino, Marimo, and many others. - Recent unusual visitors:
Stone'D (Hole and Holland). - How you maintain good relationships with the neighborhood:
The police box in front of Nishi-Ogikubo Station has asked us not to skate around the station when we're getting from place to place, and to avoid skating in crowded areas. So we also remind people that when they're pushing along the river, they should get off their boards if someone is coming toward them. If someone's walking their dog, get off your board. And don't push at full speed. We're also mindful of where people smoke when they visit the shop. When we have a big crowd for a video premiere, it draws attention and complaints can come pretty quickly. So I ask people to take a walk along the river or down quieter streets if they want to smoke. I also participate in local shopping street events and try to maintain good relationships with the community. - What matters most to you when filming:
The spot. - What you spend the most time on when editing:
Balance. - Nogawa Park or Koganei Park:
What we call Nogawa is technically Musashino Park, which is right next to Nogawa Park. There's plenty of shade in the summer, and in the fall, they hold a hippie festival called Harappa Matsuri. I also love having a drink by the fountain next to the park, using the stone in the middle as a table. We used to go there on field trips in elementary school, so the place has always felt really comforting to me. Koganei Park is somewhere I've taken my kids to play since they were little. I first went there during the pandemic. It's a huge park where you can even have barbecues. There's also a skateable area called Tsukinoki Hiroba, where even the cracks created by growing tree roots are part of the fun. It's known as a mecca for slappy grinds. Both parks have lots of Riverbirch locals, so I love them both! - Memories of Soshigaya Park:
I used to go there a lot in my late teens. I became friends with the Setagaya skaters, and we'd skate all day. I spent so much time skating and hanging out around that area. I'd skate at the park with Yasutaka Shiraishi and then head out to the streets. I also got to be in some local skate videos. There were so many great older skaters who looked out for me. They were a little scary at first, though... - The dark side of Soshigaya Park:
The skateable area has shrunk to less than half of what it used to be. - Memories of Uniful:
It was a deck brand run by Shin Okada and Naotaka Oya, and they hooked me up as a flow rider back in the day. I was so stoked to go on tour with Moriyasu Nishihira. Everyone really took good care of me. - What you collect:
Photographs. - Your biggest claim to fame in high school:
Nobody could beat me in long-distance running. - Something reckless you did when you were younger:
Toppa. - Your 20s or your 40s:
Right now. - What you're lacking:
Skills. - Your secret to staying skinny:
I've always been super skinny. - How often you drink:
I hardly ever drink when I'm skating. - How you take care of your mental health:
Getting enough sleep, eating vegetables, talking to someone whenever something's bothering me, and going skating in the morning. - Your third place:
A certain place in Nagano. - Hobbies outside of skateboarding:
Taking it easy in Nagano. - Osiris or I-Path:
AREth. - What your son is like:
Whenever he's got free time, he's drawing. He's also always making things or creating sounds. And when we're at a skatepark, he'll keep skating until the very last minute. - A moment that almost broke you:
There was this one spot I really wanted to skate. I spent time practicing on the curbs at Nogawa to prepare myself, but I went to the spot three times and ended up rolling over the curb and slamming onto my hip every single time. Each slam put me out for three weeks. I'm never going back. - Why you brought back arukuna:
Because my knees have started hurting... We actually had an arukuna part in the Riverbirch DVD, too. Before that, it was called arukuna_tv. The new project is a continuation of the original DVD, and I recently uploaded arukuna II, the second installment counting from that DVD. My ultimate dream is to make another full DVD. - What's next for Riverbirch and Arukuna:
I just want to keep skating with everyone, going on tours, and having video premieres together.
