I met Greg Dezecot a few years ago while working on the "Frame by frame" video project and we became friends

Greg is the kind of skater always motivated to go push the streets and look for spots with his own approach.Ad camera bag, cruiser board and city or metro map to a cool dude down to earth and always motivated, you got Greg Dezecot.

/Hi Greg, first off, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit
about your association with skateboarding:

Hi Leo ! My name's Greg Dezecot, I'm 27 and I live in Paris, France. I
started skating 12 years ago with my little brother Jo. We came from a
1.300 habitants village in the center of France. It seemed not easy to
start skating there but it gave us a non-stop spot seeking wish and a
good DIY sense. Really early, we started filming, making photographs,
building spots… Jo became photographer and I became film editor. Skate
can be a great formation. I directed two full length skate videos.
"The Skate Pistols video" (my hometown skateshop) and an independent
project called "Frame By Frame".

(french) Salut Léo. Je m'appelle Greg Dezecot, j'ai 27 ans et vis à Paris. J'ai
commencé le skate il y a 12 ans avec mon petit frère Jo. Nous venons
d'un petit village de 1300 habitants ce qui n'a pas l'air facile au
début pour faire du skate mais qui donne une envie perpettuelle de
recherche de spot et de demerde. Très vite nous avons commencé à
filmer, faire des photos, construire des spots... Jo est devenu
photographe et moi monteur. j'ai réalisé deux full lenght skate vidéo.

/We met though the frame by frame video project, how was working for this
video and what did it change for you?

Working on this movie was incredible because it was my first
independent project. I co-directed this video with three other
film-makers (Romain Batard, Olivier Fanchon and Aymeric Bertrand) that
used to work with me on our website called "Behind The Lens".
We had the ambition to do something together more concrete than the
small edits we used to do for years on our website, so the "Frame By
Frame" idea was born.
It's a video that reflects our vision of skateboarding, with skaters
that we like to share skate sessions with.
The hardest part of making this project was finding sponsors , and
that taught us to only count on ourselves… DIY man!

(french) Travailler sur cette vidéo fût incroyable car c'était mon premier
projet indépendent.
J'ai co-réalisé cette vidéo avec trois autres vidéastes avec qui nous
avions un site internet qui s'appelait "behind the lens"
Nous avions l'ambition de concrétiser ces années de travail sur le web
par une full lenght qui donnera "Frame by Frame".
C'est une vidéo qui représente notre vision du skate, avec des skaters
avec qui nous aimons partager des sessions.
Le point négatif de ce projet a été la grande difficulté à trouver des
sponsor, et cela m'a appris à ne compter que sur moi même. DIY man!

/You've been filming for a long time now. How do you manage to be a
filmaker and a skateboarder at the same time?

It's true that I have to deal with two passions in my life;
Skateboarding and making videos and photographs. It was natural for
me to do both a hundred percent though. During the skate sessions I'm always
separated in between skating the spots or filming. That's a
big deal for me !!! That's why I'm always carrying my two boards, my
skateboard and my filming board... 

(french) C'est vrai que j'ai deux passions dans la vie; le skate et l'image que
je pratique dans la vidéo et la photo. Il était naturel pour moi de
faire les deux à fond. Sur les sessions je suis toujours partagé entre
skater les spots ou filmer la sessions. C'est un choix tellement dur à
faire... C'est pour ça que sur chaque session je me retrouve avec mes
deux board, mon skate et ma filming board....

/How is it living in Paris? How would you describe the parisian scene? how
would you describe the french scene?

Living and skating in Paris is amazing! The city has an extremely
rich architecture. Each neighborough have its own ambience and you can
find spots at almost every street corners. For someone that grew up on
a small town, it's paradise. You can roll everywhere and the police
don't care about skateboarding. I felt in love with the streets of this
city! There is a lot of good skaters but only a few realise that Paris is full of spots.
Parisian skaters are in general more influentced  by west coast american skateboarding.
For sure, there's no street plazas at each corners. So it's kind of difficult to
convince basics parisians skaters to cruise in the city,
visit new boroughts and make them leave their everyday basic skate spot.
Of course there are a few that are ready to explore and shredd the streets.
The French skate scene is full of people ready to do a lot of interesting things
but there is actually not so much going on… The most motivated are usually
guys from little cities that don't have anything to skate.
So I'm filming most of the time with guys from all the country and
foreigners than real parisians ! 

(french) Vivre et skater à Paris est incroyable ! c'est une ville extremement
riche d'un point de vue de l'architecture. Chaque quartier a sa propre
ambiance, et tu trouves des spots à tout les coin de rues! Pour
quelqu'un qui a grandi dans une petite ville, c'est le paradis. Tu
peux rouler partout et la police ne t'empêche pas de skater. Je suis
tomber amoureux des rues de cette ville ! Après, les skaters, bien que
nombreux et très talentueux ne sont pas tous de cet avis sur la
richesse en spot de Paris. Les mecs sont en général influencés par le
skate des pros américains. Evidement il n'y a pas des street plaza à
tout les coins de rues. C'est donc plutot difficille de convaincre les
skaters parisiens de base de cruiser dans la ville, dans de nouveau
quartier et de les sortir de leurs habitudes de chill sur leurs spots
classiques. Il y a quand même des skaters qui sortent du lot et pret a
explorer et à shredder les rues !!! La scène française est pleine de
personnes prête à faire des choses mais il ne se passe finalement pas
assez de chose... Les plus motivés sont ceux des petites villes qui n'ont
pas de spots à skater. Je me retrouve donc à filmer la plupart du
temps avec des provinciaux ou des étrangers de passage à paris !

/How do you see the japanese skate scene? Could you compare it with the
french scene?

The Japanese skate scene seems very productive and united.
People doing projects together, making interesting video projects all the time,
web magazines, fanzines… I don't feel that Japanese skateboarding is
toon influenced by the worldwide skating. I feel like they're able to evolve by themself
whiteout looking too much on what's going on on the other side of the pacific ocean.
That makes it fresh and spontaneous ! In France, skateboarding is still too crippled. As
soon as you don't fit the american model, people stop following you.

La scène japonaise m'a l'air super productive et unie. Les gens font
des projet ensemble, créent sans cesse des vidéos, des web magazines,
des fanzines... Ce qui me plait le plus dans le skate japonais est
qu'il ne semble pas être vraiment influencé par le reste du skate
mondial. Comme si il évolué par lui même sans regarder ce qu'il se
passe de l'autre côté du pacifique. Cela donne une telle fraicheur et
une telle spontanéité ! En France le skate est assez bridé, bloqué. Dès que tu
sors du modèle américain, les gens ne suivent plus. Certaines personnes
parlent beaucoup mais ne font rien de concret...

/Any projects? What's next? Any thanks?

Since a year and a half, I'm filming for a new skate video project. A
video where I want to show the Paris streets and
districts more than the skaters. The city's gonna be the star ! This
project's will take me a lot of time to finish because I don't have
as much free time as before. My film editor job takes me five days a
week. A real adult life hahaha !
Thanks to all the skaters that are bieleving in that new project and
that are following me on skate sessions and to Olivier "Dr." Fanchon
to helping me doing this new adventure. Thanks to you and VHS mag for

(french) Depuis 1 ans et demi je filme pour un nouveau projet de video de
skate. Une vidéo ou je veux mettre les rues et les différents
quartiers de Paris en avant plutôt que les skater. La ville sera la
star ! C'est un projet qui va me prendre pas mal de temps de temps à
réaliser car je n'ai pas autant de temps libre qu'avant, mon travail
de monteur m'occupe 5 jours par semaine, une vraie vie d'adulte hahaha
!
